Natalie Ruth Fry Horne used to LOVE "Wacky Wednesdays". In the summer at East Lake United Methodist Church, on Wednesdays (DUH) , they used to have a fun day for the kids in the summer. She LOVED it. I don't know what wacky things they did, but she sure loved going and would pitch a sure nuff Southern "hissy fit" if she couldn't go. ( I don't know why I thought about that but was trying to think of a good title to today and it just popped in my brain!)! Probably if someone asked her what she remembered about church when she was a kid, She would probably say, "I loved Wacky Wednesday".(I think they had water gun battles between the boys and girls, for one thing!)! She even had a tee-shirt that says "WACKY WEDNESDAYS AT ELUMC" that I found the other day!!! HA! Yes, indeed, that girl loved her Wacky Wednesdays!!!! So, WACKY as it sounds, I enjoy Wednesdays, too. It's like a cool day to me--I always liked the middle of things. Wednesdays and the middle of Oreos....! I can tell you already that this post is all over the place.....!!! (if you are A.D.D., you understand it tho! LOL!)!
Today's Wednesday devotional, (sorry, I'm on a devotional kick but , hey, it is LENT, ok?), it was really good. I picked up a little booklet "Daily Reflections for Lent" (Not by Bread Alone) by Robert E. Morneau while at Advent last week. {*FYI, they have the best little bookstore there!!!! If you ever go there, check it out!*} Anyway, I thought it was an Episcopal devotional but not sure, could be Catholic. Anyway, it's good. I always find that Episcopal and Catholic devotionals ,a lot of the time ,are those that "cut to the chase" and get to the meat of things in other words, short and sweet. I like that! No "hemmy-hawing" around. Today's was good. It was on "Attentiveness/Responsiveness". I loved this paragraph:
the Spanish philosopher Jose' Ortega y Gasset (whew! what a name!), asserted, "Tell me to what you pay attention and I will tell you who you are".
WOW. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that. Read it again. I've read it several times and thought about it a lot today. What do I pay most attention to? I would guess, my family. But, I would hope, also, I pay attention to God calling me. And then, to what end would that be?? I am constantly twirling that thought around and around my head. What about you? What do you think about most??? How you can make more money?Or how to share your wealth with others? Or how you can spend more time with family/friends? Or deeper--are you mission minded and think about your next mission trip (like Terry!)? Do you love to participate in church events or had you rather hang with friends? Or both: hanging with friends at church, maybe? Sharing your faith with others? Methodists cringe at this word ,(ha ha), but, what about evangelism? Just random thoughts that I am pondering also.
Further down in that paragraph the writer continued, "tell me what you respond to and I will tell you what your destiny is". Attention and response! Our identity and our destiny are wrapped up in these two words".
WOW, now that's something to ponder. Or better yet, pray over. And that's NOT wacky.
